Oh man,

I'm so very glad I randomly clicked on this. Right from the get-go, LOVING the oldschool 90's rave feeling, and this continues throughout the whole track. Love the grainy time stretching on the breaks, and the glitches are really fresh, and truly GLITCHY. By that I mean that they're not just simple retriggers. Some of the glitches in this tune sound genuine, which I love. Another element I really enjoyed was that classic bass sound starting at around 2:05. Only suggestion: I think that in pitch shifting and time stretching the main break, it's lost some of its frequencies, specifically low end in drum hits other than the kick, while the synths and bass do help to fill this gap, I think that the main break could benefit with some layering with other breaks and/or some Eqing to emphasize lesser heard frequencies.

Also, nice to see someone else producing in Renoise! Are you using the new beta yet?

houzatosis responds:

I haven't had a chance to try the beta, but I'd love to try the new instrument design.

Wow.

First time I've heard GOOD music in the top 5 in a WHILE. Loving the oldschool "sampled" feel to this song. This is really my favorite kind of hip hop. Right off the bat you've got the nice crunchy jazz chords played on a nice smooth e-piano. And the funky breaks come in very nicely. Everything just blends well. Good work.

shaggyhaired responds:

Thanks a bunch man, means a lot!

Congratulations!

Congrats on winning Retroman! You put up a good fight. Hell, you beat me first round. Two criticisms on this song: AAAAH! DBLUE! NOOOOO! If you want I can teach you how to make all the glitches Dblue does by hand, which gives much more flexibility.

Also: The drums are consistently too quiet, and also seem to be EQed a bit funny.

Other than that, this is great stuff. Keep at it.

RetromanOMG responds:

Hey, thanks, but because of Numi being unavailable at the moment, the scores can't be finalized. Hopefully I won though.

On the subject on DBlue, in the short time I've had it, it's already become gimmicky for me. I'll consider asking you for some pointers.

Yum.

Been a while since I've heard some good melodic breakcore like this. Synthwork is amazing, and constantly changing, which is something I've always loved. Drum programming is ace. All sounds are balanced nicely for the most part. The squelching acid-ish bass seems a bit loud in the mix, as do some of the melodic "piano" like instruments. But other than that, a great tune.

datamouth responds:

thanx poopr! yeah im a sucker for thick tweaking basses. i crank them up! too much maybe lol.
thanx for the great review man. means alot.

Ok.

Fuck me, this is great stuff. Really does fit the robotic description well. I enjoy all the arhythmic little whirs and noises in the background. I love how disjointed and staccato the drum hits actually are, and that stretched (or so it sounds) amen at :54 is really, really nice. Great stuff!

Spikrodd responds:

Thanks for that review. I was actually waiting for you to review it lol. es, the part at :54 is a seemingly stretched amen, but added is a slight pitch drop on each hit so it makes it seem even longer or intense than it actually is. It also helps to make it shift in from a shortened amen break.

The song's key focus was the synths, which I'm sure is noticeable in this in comparison to previous tracks. Again, it's still in the works, and when it's done, I will submit a final version. That way, you, Quarl and anyone else who reviews will get a second chance at responding.

Wow!

Once again, I'm really impressed with what you've done! Incredibly robotic!

AphoticAthanasy responds:

Thankyou for another great review . Psst, guess what ? I will be making one final robot song, that is going to blow everyone away . Wish me luck , I know you probably are anticipating on hearing it now . It's going to be insane . :3

lolwut.

Nice freesound sample there. Other than that this is alright. Not very robotic, but that's all subjective.

YouriX responds:

I'll have to disagree i kinda find this really techno robot style :P
But like you said its subjective.

Even thou i don't understand the free sampling part. This is a mix of syntrus and Nexus. Use a E-mayor chord if i can remember. And composed a very basic arp.

So far...

So far, out of all the submissions I've heard, this embodies the contest the best. It's great avant garde-ish bleeps and noise and industrial whirrs that truly sound like robots. Great sound design work here. 10/10, 5/5.

AphoticAthanasy responds:

Thankyou for being someone who understands the essence of music, and the creation of this particular song . I humbly await any of your reviews down the road .
Goodluck to you, ^^ .

Incredible.

I think this is your breakcore anthem so far right here. The drums are incredible. They're fast, and they make amazing use of pitch shifting and retriggers, and at exactly the right places. Everything just falls into place so great. I especially enjoy the fuckery happening after the "Beautiful!"

SessileNomad responds:

thanks man, i do what i can xD

same sorts of techniques i used in obscene amounts of steam, at least with the drums

It's alright.

Much too sidechained though.

Camel-Juice-Music responds:

Possibly. Some like it sidechained this much though :P
