Wow

Not often that I get to see well-produced metal on newgrounds. The balance between your instruments is pretty good, and the tone of your guitars is very full, as opposed to the usual very thin guitar sound I see on here.

nihilisticeq responds:

Thanks bro. The song is actually somewhat old so there are definitely some minor gripes I have with the production. Mostly the drums being a bit too quiet as opposed to the guitar and bass. But that's sort of common in metal so it's no biggie imho. Other stuff as well, but nothing important enough to dig out an old project file and start mixing it again.

This is incredible

This truly is an amazing song. Very few songs make me feel this happy, and this one definitely did. Your use of time signature variation is great and doesn't detract from the groove of the song like it sometimes does in other music. Your melodies..man, I can't get enough of them, and the synths playing them are all so amazing. This is a total home run, and I have no idea how you could hate something that's THIS good.

midimachine responds:

i hated it cause i spent ages writin terrible lyrics for it and got sick of it but i don't hate it anymore lol

Wow.

Congrats on making top 5 finally! You've deserved it for so long. Definitely one of my favorite musicians on Newgrounds. This song is no exception to what I've said in past reviews. You've got a style that's completely your own, and it's excellent.

Why...

Why am I not following you already? Your music is so incredibly fresh. A great breath of fresh air for Newgrounds. I've got my eye on your music feed man.

midimachine responds:

way too kind :>

Alright, I'm going to try and critique.

So from the beginning. Nice way of bringing in the downtempo rhythm from the beginning with the filter sweep. At the first "drop" I really enjoy the double time dance rhythm and the bass at that specific section is awesome. When the dubstep actually "drops" it's definitely dubstep, so that's good! One thing I'm not enjoying is the whole "sidechained" feel that everything has when the dubstep first drops. There's some certain bass sounds that REALLY stick out as much louder than the others whenever there's a lack of kick drum, so it kinda sounds weird. Now, I don't know if you're sidechaining to keep the track from clipping, or if you're just creatively doing it, but if you're trying to prevent clipping, try your hand more at strategic leveling and EQ work to keep things under control. If you're doing it creatively, I'd say just tone it down slightly.

As for sound choice it was very good. I really enjoyed the hoover stabs here and there, those were great. The actual mixing on this tune is spot on. EQing is pretty good. Though there are some sections that could use a little LESS bass and more mids, but that's alright, since this IS a bass oriented music genre.

All in all, class tune. Keep at it. 9/10 4/5

Awesome.

I heard some new sounds! Glad you chose to take some of my advice. I'm enjoying the slightly thicker pads now.

UntitledWhite responds:

Glad you enjoyed it! I was looking for an appropriate pad sound for the longest time but settled on one that complements the keyboard sound as well as accents the background. Stay tuned! I usually have genius outbursts of creativity every other month or so LOL

Wonderful.

Right from the beginning I knew this was special. Those clear watery rhodes sounding tones. And then you come in with these awesome simplistic yet kickin' IDM hip hoppy drums. Really nailed it dude. Only advice would be to extend it, and as you go on, keep thickening up the drums with new little noises here and there, as well as thickening your melodic atmosphere with some more pad layers. I really like the minimalistic sound of this though.

UntitledWhite responds:

I love you

Awesome.

Whatever 303 emulator you used in this is FANTASTIC! Can you tell me what it is, because I've been looking for the right one FOREVER. This song is just amazing. Total oldschool acidfest. I especially like those slightly detuned high synths that play at the climaxes of the song. Wonderful sounds.

Wow!

Very neat tune here! Love every element. It's that type of hip-hop sound I enjoy thoroughly, yet it has TONS of IDM influences and I love it!

Alright.

So here's a real review, since this is much better than what you had originally uploaded. I'll split it up by things I liked vs. things I didn't.

Things I liked:
-While it was simple, the melody is very effective.
-Some of the non melodic sounds you used were really neat and unexpected.
-The intro was well done. I like the ambient synth in the beginning.
-Buildup to the first "drop" was pretty neat.

Things I didn't Like:
-That Epiano/Clav/xylophone sounding synth is WAY too loud over everything else.
-The first drop of the song is very quiet compared to the buildup right before it. If you read traditional music, it's like there was a sfortzando or similar there. The buildup should crescendo up to the drop and the drop should definitely be the loudest point of the crescendo.
-The drums were lacking a bit. They seemed a bit lackluster.
-It sounds like you used a compressor with a long release on the master, because whenever the basses kick in, it gets quiet all of a sudden and then the volume dramatically increases right after that. NEVER put a compressor or limiter on the master. It skews your perception of levels.
-The basses seemed to lack a clear low end, BUT don't take that as me telling you to turn the bass up in an EQ. Definitely not. Try varying the bass' actual sound. Don't always use bitcrushing! It's on every damn bass in the song! Try other effects.
-Could use a little variation in structure. Most dubstep tunes I've heard, though you don't have to strictly follow this, have more than one drop, where this only had one that I could REALLY discern from the rest of the song.

So tips in general: Take some time out to learn EQing and leveling each of your channels/tracks. Don't be afraid to turn certain elements down. Don't worry, we'll still hear them. Your music doesn't have to be rubbing right up against the 0db threshold. In fact, it shouldn't really.

You've definitely got the right idea, you just don't have the proper sounds quite yet. If you replaced most of the synths and sounds in this with better samples/synths, it would make a hell of a difference.

Sorry I was so harsh in my original review. I just can't stand music that clips all the time.

My name is Jacob. I like anime/manga/comics. I'm 18. I make breakcore/IDM music (check it out). I play lots of rhythm games (DDR, ITG, PIU, BM, SM etc.) I play piano, and have been for about 4 years now.
